Distracted Driving is anything that takes your eyes or mind off the road or your hands off the wheel. It is said that 8 out of 10 accidents in the road is caused by distracted driver. Apparently this is an issue that should be taken seriously.
The info-graphic above is from Insurance Hunter. It shows statistics and the 4 Types of Distractions as enumerated below:
- Auditory – hearing something not related to driving. Kids are 4x more distracting than adults.
- Visual – Looking anything other than road. 40.9% Billboards 85.7% signs.
- Cognitive – Thinking of things that are not related to driving. Hand free texting is still considered “multi-tasking”
- Manual – using something other than the wheel. 59% eat or drink 19.9% talking on the phone.
Distracted driving will cost you: damage your car, money since there are fines in some provinces – in Alberta it will cost you $172.00, and the worst is life.
How Can We Stop Distracted Drivers?
There should be a law for distracted driving and should be strictly implemented. The Government of Alberta has a law for this which took effect last September 1, 2011. The law applies to using electronic gadgets (such as phone, laptop, and even GPS), reading, drinking coffee, personal grooming and more.
Clearly multi-tasking is a NO-NO when driving. When you need to operate you gadgets see to it that you stop in a safe zone.
Passengers are said to be the cause of distraction especially kids. Give something that will occupy them, such as video games and movies. See to it that your pets are secured. And of course don`t drive when you are arguing with somebody.
Stay focus on the road and wheel. Have a presence of mind while driving. Just leave all worries behind you.
Help educate people especially dirvers and aspiring drivers. You can do this by spreading the words through social media.
